SINGKWENTA! MuEd@50 Anniversary Concert a Success

A successful golden anniversary concert was mounted by the Music Education Department of the UP College of Music to a full-house crowd at the Abelardo Hall Auditorium last March 3, 2017. The concert which was entitled, "Samu't-Saring Musika" featured diverse music performances across age groups by music education performing groups like the UP Rondalla, Musika Sophia Early Music Ensemble, JMEG Chorale, Guitar Guild, and Cuerdas Comparsa Strings Ensemble as well as guest performers like retired music education faculty, former Dean Mauricia Borromeo and former chair Prof. Leticia Del Valle, NCCA Rondalla under Prof. Elaine Espejo-Cajucom, Talayan Children's Rondalla under Ms. Mariefrance Ballester, QMC Golden Nightingale Chorale under Mrs. Engracia Lim, and the Taytay Youth Philharmonic Orchestra.

The musical performances were interspersed with video montages and narration by music education faculty, Prof. Janel Bauza, Prof. Sherla Najera, Prof. Daisy Valenciano, Ms. Patricia Rodriguez-Carranza, Ms. Hannah Oh, and department chair, Prof. Jocelyn Timbol-Guadalupe.

Among the audience who watched the well-attended event were current UP officials, UP Diliman Chancellor Michael Tan and his family, CHE dean Aurorita Roldan and her family, CMu dean Jose Buenconsejo who also gave the welcome message, Prof. Mitzi Reyes of the CFA and faculty of the College of Music. Also present were outgoing NCCA Chairman Prof. Felipe De Leon, Jr., former UP President Noel Soriano, former UP VP for Finance Honesto Nuqui, Dr. Elizabeth Arcellana of UP PGH, and a host of music education alumni through the years.

Lucky audience members were also given gift certificates from event sponsors, Serye and JB Music. The two-hour concert was capped with a touching rendition of UP Naming Mahal by music education performing groups, UP officials, and music education alumni.

Congratulatory messages after the event included a message from Dr. Patricia Campbell, international music education scholar from the University of Washington on the importance of music education such as the UP Music Education Department in drawing out music in the lives of children, adults, and communities.
