Maestro Jose Valdez is already an institution in the world of the classical guitar. He is the most illustrious guitar maestro and one of the most respectable figures in Philippine Guitar history. As a professional, he has taught and performed for a span of more than 30 years, starting as a child prodigy at the age of 14. It was in this capacity that his name has become a byword among guitar aficionados. Ranked as one of the early exponents of the guitar by the CCP ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ARTS, he has pioneered the guitar courses in several schools and has authored and introduced invaluable guitars subjects such as: “PROGRESSIVE STUDIES IN PHILIPPINE GUITAR MUSIC”. THE ART OF TRANSCRIBING AND ARRANGING FOR THE GUITAR”, “ANDALUCIAN STUDIES” (flamenco music), “ADVANCE PEDAGOGY AND GUITAR LITERATURE”.

As a concertist and music faculty, he is a member of the prestigious MU PHI EPSILON (Alpha Tau chapter), international music fraternity. As composer and arranger, with FILSCAP, an organization reserved only for the country’s elite musicians. He is currently guitar professor at the PHILIPPINE COLLEGE OF MUSICS AND ARTS, affiliate PWU, ST. SCHOLASTICA’S COLLEGE OF MUSIC, UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES’ COLLEGE OF MUSIC, ST. PAUL’S COLLEGE OF MUSIC, THE PHILIPPINE NORMAL UNIVERSITY and LA CONCORDIA COLLEGE.

Today Professor Valdez is fully engrossed in doing orchestrations and in developing young guitar players. His success as mentor is widely known for he has produced many protegees who have become competent teachers and performers themselves both here and abroad as well as prize winners in several guitar competitions.

He is often heard as saying, “Every student is an entrustment by God”, a simple yet very effective formula which has always served as a driving force in bringing his students to their peaks of success, as if a portion of himself has been left to each and everyone of them. He has been called to teach by the Lord, the Supreme Dean, and this he had done so religiously all these years. His inspiration and energy never burns out, for every student is an entrustment, and every lesson is sacred, and the Lord’s hands is not just in one or in a few schools,- but in all schools, all universities, for He is, after all, the Caller, the Supreme Dean. This is obviously felt by all who have been privileged enough to learn from Maestro Valdez, for he has accustomed himself in treating his students as a father would treat his own son or his own daughter. It is apparent that beneath his solemnity of expression, glows his lifetime dedication and profound objective, to communicate and share all his God-given talents by way of his invaluable tutelage, and never ending mentorship.
