GEMMA FILIPINA T. MALICDEM, Keyboard Department Faculty and former College Secretary (for more than 14 years) of the University of the Philippines College of Music (CMu). A scholar of the Philippine High School for the Arts, she finished her Bachelor of Music degree, cum laude, as well as Master of Music degree in Piano from the University of the Philippines. With her decision to concentrate on teaching and music administration, she pursued further studies abroad where she earned her second Master of Music degree, major in Piano Pedagogy, from Kent State University, Ohio. USA. Her principal mentors were Imelda Ongsiako (Piano), Lois Rova Ozanich (Piano Pedagogy), Jerry Davidson (Piano Pedagogy), and Frank Wiley (New Music). She received the Accompanist Award from OPERA Kent and an International Award for Academic Excellence also from KSU. She is also a prizewinner in the Jeffrey Ching Piano Competition and the Piano Teachers Guild of the Philippines Piano Competition. Some of her college piano students are likewise grand prize winners in the National Music Competitions for Young Artists, Cultural Center of the Philippines. Manila and the UP Piano Concerto Compeition.

Prof. Malicdem teaches Piano, Piano Pedagogy, and Philippine Piano Literature classes in UP. In 2000 and 2005 she attended the World Piano Pedagogy Conference (WPPC) in Anaheim, California, USA, an annual conference participated in by piano teachers from around the world, attended as well by distinguished pedagogues Leon Fleisher, Yoheved Kaplinsky (Julliard School), Claude Frank (Curtis Institute), Vitaly Margulis (UCLA), Luis de Mora Castro (Spain), Scott McBride Smith (Royal American Conservatory Examinations President) and authors Jane Bastien, Dennis Alexander, and Randall Faber. In November 2007 she was invited by WPPC Executive Director Benjamin Saver to be one of the judges for the Final Round of the 2nd Annual WPPC Piano Competition held in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was invited in 2012 as the only Philippine representative to Randall Faber’s Piano Adventures Workshop in Singapore, while in 2013 she visited Vietnam to be the college representative to the Southeast Asian Directors of Music Conference. Incidentally, she was the lead organizer to Faber’s first-ever “Piano Adventures” Workshop in the Philippines (2013) held at the UP College of Music Abelardo Hall Auditorium and attended by more than 150 piano teachers, enthusiasts, and music students from all over the Philippines. As Vice President of the PTGP, she Chaired and organized the first PTGP Piano Ensemble Competition (2014) and PTGP Piano Etude Competition (2015), participated in by pianists from all over the country.

She is the only faculty in the CMu who has been active in more than one UP University Council Committee - Committee on Student Admission, Progress, and Graduation and the Committee on Extension Services. And, along with her colleagues in the UCES, published in 2015 the proceedings from the first “UP Diliman-Wide Colloquium on Extension Services”. The CD 2 “Saysay Himig” which was released in February 2017 featured three Filipino works arranged for bandurria and piano by Edna Culig and Gemma Malicdem.

A “Nationally Certified Teacher of Music” of the Music Teachers National Association, USA, Prof. Malicdem was honored in 2016 by the UP College of Music with “Gawad Fernando Canon-Faculty” Centennial Award.
