Dr. de la Peña earned his Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the University of Hawai'i as a degree scholar of the East-West Center. He finished his master and bachelor degrees from the University of the Philippines, majoring in composition. His research studies center on the discursive elements of music articulated in sung narratives, repartee, and ritual of the Kanakana-ey of Benguet and the Tagalog of Quezon and most recently, hihop artists of Pinoy Rap. Dr. de la Peña currently chairs the Department of Musicology where he teaches courses in the music of Asia and Oceania, 20th Century western art music and Ethnomusicology. He also sits at the Board of Advisers of the UP Center of Ethnomusicology and hosts, writes and directs the College's weekly radio show, Tunog at Tinig, heard over DZUP.
