TREMOLO RONDALLA SINGAPORE DONATES O.C. BANDILLA BANDURRIA TO THE COLLEGE

  • Through a partnership in research and development (instrument making) with O.C. Bandilla, Philippines, Dr. Joe Peters donated a “Singapore Model Prime Bandurria” to the College on 20 July 2015. Before the donation, Dr. Peters gave a lecture on the rondalla in Singapore, particularly on his three-decade long involvement in rondalla research and pedagogy.

In the lecture, Dr. Peters highlighted his findings that the rondalla instruments in the Philippines were diffused, not directly from Spain, but through the galleons from Acapulco Mexico (1565 to 1815) which had intimate links to countries in Latin America.

Dr. Peters also shared his experience in teaching the rondalla in Singapore, i.e., after his master’s degree in music education from UP College of Music in the 1970s. Dr. Peters has taught this iconic Filipino music to Singaporeans, especially at the National University of Singapore and has been a director of Tremolo Rondalla which has traded Philippine Bandilla instruments in Singapore.

The event was attended by members of UP Rondalla and string majors of the College.
