UP and CCP partners in Dvorak’s Rusalka

  • The University of the Philippines Diliman College of Music and the Cultural Center of the Philippines will be mounting Antonin Dvorak’s lyric fairy tale opera “Rusalka.” The show will be staged in the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino on September 11 and 12, 2014 both 7:30pm, and in the Abelardo Hall Auditorium at the UP College of Music in Quezon City on September 23 and 24, 2014 both 6:30pm.

  • The opera was composed by a Czech nationalist composer and has never been performed in its entirety in the country. The full-length show will feature some of the best young talents in the country. Notable performers are 2013 Aliw Awardee Fame Flores and Philippine Madrigal Singers member Bianca Camille Lopez, both portraying the main character Rusalka; Tenors Malvin Macasaet and Christian Nagano, both playing the Prince; and other cast members are from the University of the Philippines and University of Santo Tomas. The opera’s artistic director is Alegria Ferrer, and the conductor is Josefino Chino Toledo. The setting of the work will be adapted to Filipinos.

  • The performance on September 23 in UP will coincide with the 150th birth anniversary of Isabelo delos Reyes, who is the father of Philippine folklore, and the performance on September 24 will close the year-long 50th anniversary celebration of UP College of Music in Diliman.
