The UP Symphony Orchestra (UPSO), the official system-wide orchestra of the University of the Philippines, will be introduced to the entire community with their first concert entitled Unang Pasko at the University Amphitheater on December 13, entirely free of charge.
UPSO will feature classical and contemporary Christmas music by Western and Filipino composers including National Artists Lucio San Pedro’s Simbanggabi and Ryan Cayabyab’s arrangements of Filipino Christmas songs. They will be joined by some of UP’s best and most acclaimed official choral groups – the UP Concert Chorus, the UP Los Baños Choral Ensemble, and the UP Manila Chorale. The reigning Grand Champion of the Akapela Open International 2018, ConChords, will also be performing selections of Christmas songs arranged by UPSO’s very own music director, Prof. Josefino “Chino” Toledo. Additionally, members of the UP Dance Company will be providing an elegant ballet interpretation of the famous Nutcracker Suite by Pyotr Tchaikovsky
Under the directorship of Prof. Toledo, the orchestra currently has 65 members coming exclusively from within the UP community, composed of alumni, students, faculty, and staff, who were selected through a rigorous audition process. Accepted members currently represent three campuses – Diliman, Los Baños, and Manila.
UPSO shall function not only as a training orchestra for young conductors, laboratory orchestra for Filipino composers and repertory orchestra for musicians, but also as a representative of the University and the country on the worldwide stage.
