The University of the Philippines Rondalla (UPR) was privileged to participate in this year’s Filipino-American History Month in Honolulu, Hawaii from October 3-7, 2019. The Hawaii tour was possible thru the assistance of the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu, University of the Philippines Alumni Association - Hawaii Chapter (UPAAH), UP Office of the Chancellor Diliman, UP Office of the President, National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).

In connection with the Filipino-American History Month celebration in Hawaii on October 3-7, 2019, the University of the Philippines Rondalla (UPR) performed Filipino traditional and contemporary music in various institutions of Hawaii. The objectives of this project are to introduce the rich musical history of the Philippines with focus on the Rondalla to Filipino-Americans and the general public in Hawaii. Secondly, the UPR aims to build a more interested younger generation that will learn about the Rondalla. As the UPR will be bringing in lectures and workshops on the basic techniques of playing its instruments, the UPR sees the youth taking this educational opportunity to learn from these activities. Thirdly, the UPR aims to connect the University of the Philippines with the scholars and musicians of Hawaii’s various institutions. The UPR believes that the Rondalla is an appropriate vehicle by which the Filipino culture is seen, heard, and promoted.

The cultural program (concerts, lectures, and workshops) is a collaboration of the UPR, the University of the Philippines Alumni Association Hawaii Chapter, and the Philippine Consulate General of Honolulu, which ended as a very successful event.

It is noteworthy to thank the sponsors who made this event possible namely: UP Alumni Association Hawaii Chapter, Philippine Consulate General of Honolulu, UP Office of the Chancellor Diliman, UP Office of the President, National Commission for Culture and the Arts, East-West Center, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), University of Hawaii (UH) Center for Philippine Studies, UH Music Department, Hawaii Music Educators Association, American Orff-Schulwerk Association Hawaii Chapter, Alamoana Center Stage, Farrington High School, Filipino Community Center of Hawaii, UPAA Diliman, UP College of Music faculty and staff, to our Dean, our family and friends, who supported us at their utmost generosity.
