AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

UP College of Music Online Audition 2020

Only applicants who PASS the online theory exam will submit their online video audition and be scheduled for interview by departments that require interviews.

The inclusive dates of uploading video auditions are 11 to 15 June 2020, Thursday to Monday. Please note that some departments may have a cutoff time of submission.

Below are the online audition requirements and guidelines for each department.

Composition Department

REQUIREMENTS AND INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Composition

    1. Submission of two (2) written/notated compositions in PDF format that best represent the applicant’s skills and style.

    2. Audio recordings of the submitted compositions in MP3 format. MIDI realizations are acceptable.

    3. PDF and MP3 must be emailed to mocabansag@up.edu.ph at least two (2) days before the Panel Interview.

  2. Online Panel Interview in 2 sections

    • Interview with the Composition and Theory department faculty

    • A dictation diagnostic exam will take place after the faculty interview. Applicant should prepare / bring BLANK STAFF (MUSIC) PAPER, PENCILS AND ERASER for this segment.

Conducting and Choral Ensemble Department

REQUIREMENTS


This audition process consists of three parts — all three parts must be video-recorded:

  1. reading of ‘interview’ answers for all four questions [provided below]

  2. unaccompanied singing of two vocal lines from the pieces attached below while conducting the time signature, and

  3. unaccompanied singing of any kundiman or broadway musical piece (example: from Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, etc.) of the applicant’s choice.

INSTRUCTIONS


  1. In lieu of face to face interview, the Faculty of the Conducting Department would like the applicant to write and read the answer to the following questions:

    1. What is your background in choral music?

    2. Why are you applying for the choral (or instrumental) conducting program?

    3. What are your goals in applying for the program?

    4. How do you plan to achieve your goals in 4 years [or within the duration of the program]?

  2. Sing two lines from the music “Oculi Omnium” by Charles Wood and “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” (Trad. American Melody) provided below. One of the lines must be your voice classification (soprano, alto, tenor, or bass).

  3. Record a solo song — Your choice of song from any kundiman or Broadway musical genres. Sing without any accompaniment.

Dance Program under Voice, Music Theatre, & Dance Department

REQUIREMENTS AND INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preferably has two to three (2-3 years) of intensive dance training in classical ballet.

  2. Prepare the following:

    1. barre exercises that comprise of plies, combined battement tendus and battement jetés, ronde de jambe, adage and grand battement

    2. center practice with pirouettes and battement

    3. an adage sequence to show different directions of the body

    4. a short petite allegro with battus

    5. a short allegro with leaps

    6. a two (2)-minute movement study

  3. All exercises must be recorded and submitted via google drive to albaguilat@up.edu.ph

  4. A recording of a past live performance must be submitted via google drive or a youtube link to albaguilat@up.edu.ph

  5. An interview will be scheduled via Zoom or any online platform available to the applicant.

  6. ATTIRE :

    Female: black or blue leotard, pink or beige tights and ballet shoes

    Male: white top and black tights, ballet shoes

Keyboard Department

Audition Guidelines for Applicants to AA and BM programs:

  1. The online audition shall be done via Facebook Live and posted on the applicant’s timeline in public setting.

  2. The video recording shall contain a total of 15-30-minute performance of the audition repertoire.

  3. All pieces shall be played from memory.

  4. The order of performance of pieces shall be at the discretion of the applicant.

  5. The raw, unedited video recording with clear sound should show the picture from the viewpoint of the audience, showing the entire body and the keys of the piano.

  6. One recording per piece is highly recommended.

  7. The following shall be sent per e-mail to eraldecoa@up.edu.ph on the day of the online audition:

  8. 1) link to the video recording via Facebook Live and

    2) a program in Word file containing the name of the applicant, program applied for, composer and complete title and duration of each piece.

Repertoire Requirements for AA & BM:

  1. Scales and arpeggios (major, harmonic and melodic minor in four octaves) to be chosen by the panel from the cycle of 4ths (F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb) and 5ths (C, G, D, A, E, B). This requirement will be assigned to the applicant one week before the submission of recorded audition.

  2. One work by J.S. Bach chosen from the Two- or Three-Part Inventions, the 48 Preludes and Fugues, Toccatas, Partitas or the English or French Suites
  3. One virtuosic etude chosen from Czerny op. 299 (except nos. 1-5), Chopin (except op. 10 no. 3, op. 10 no. 6 and op. 25 no. 7) Liszt, Rachmaninoff (except op. 33 no. 7, op. 39 no. 2), Scriabin (except op. 2 no. 1), Prokofiev or Debussy

  4. One fast movement of a classical sonata by Haydn, Mozart (except K. 545), Beethoven (except op. 49 nos. 1 & 2) or Schubert

  5. A work by a romantic or 20th-21st century composer or a Filipino piece
Note: A video recording of audition repertoire played on a keyboard shall be acceptable in case the applicant has no access to a piano.

AUDITION GUIDELINES

  1. Applicants who passed the Music Theory exam and meet the department cut-offcan proceed to submit the audition requirements. The requirements are 3 videos, a handwritten essay, and an interview. Music Theory exam passers will be posted on the UP College of Music website https://music.upd.edu.ph/

  2. The 3 videos and the essay, specified on Tables 1 & 2, must be submitted by uploading them on June 11 to 15, 2020 to a google drive folder. Share this folder with the Music Education Department email mued.upd@up.edu.ph. You need to have a google email (Gmail) to be able to do this.

  4. Applicants who passed the Music Theory exam and meet the department cut-off must be interviewed by the Music Education Audition Panel through ZOOM Video Communication on June 20, 2020 Saturday. Guidelines are detailed on Table 3.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS (BM Musicology, AA Asian instruments primary con.)

  1. Video of applicant performing one (1) selected music piece

  2. Duration: 2- 3 mins.

    Choice of music: any (classical, pop, indigenous, world etc.)

    Specifications:
    1. Half-body shot

    2. State your name, age and title of the piece to be performed.

    3. If playing an instrument, this must be visible.

    4. The use of m1 (minus one/karaoke) is allowed as long as the voice of the applicant stays loud and clear, not drowned out by the m1.

    5. A cappella singing (no accompaniment) is allowed.

    6. Video must have no cuts or edits. It must run straight from start to finish.

    7. Video must have clear visual and sound qualities.

    8. Please dress appropriately.

  3. Essay – for BM Musicology applicants only

  4. Topic: Choose one (1) from the given questions:

    1. How do you envision yourself as an “Iskolar ng Bayan” in your applied major at the UP College of Music ?

    2. What is the role and value of music in a pandemic?

    1. Font size: 12

    2. Font: Times New Roman or Arial

    3. Spacing: 1.5

    4. Length: 1 page

  5. Short Interview (background, education, family, goals, reasons for applying, seriousness of intent, essay etc.)

AUDITION PROCEDURE


  1. All applicants must create a folder within the Google Drive Link provided. Name your folder as follows: Last Name, First Name_Course Applied

    Example: Silvestre, Rebecca_BM Musicology

  2. Upload requirement no. 1 into your folder in the Google drive.

  3. For BM Musicology applicants, upload both no. 1 (video) and no. 2 (essay) into your folder in the Google drive.

  4. All files must be uploaded on or before June 15, 2020.

  5. The interview will be conducted via Zoom. Guidelines will be sent to applicants.

GUIDELINES



  1. Video record all the required pieces by using a reliable and working phone or camera. Your device must have a properly working microphone and a clear camera. You may use an external recording microphone if necessary. The video output must have a smooth and clear audio, and must be accurately in sync with a clear visual image. Video and audio editing are strictly prohibited. You are required to dress in proper and decent performance attire (no t-shirts, jeans, rubber shoes, sandals, or slippers).

  2. See image* below for a sample visual representation on how your video should be portrayed.

  3. Upload all the required videos via Google Drive or a private YouTube account and send links to the department chair’s email address (nvmanimtim1@up.edu.ph) on or before 15 June 2020 at 5:00 pm. Label your video/s (one file per piece) in this format:

  5. Create a personal Zoom account. The department will send you an email between 16-18 June 2020 regarding specific schedule for sight-reading, scale playing, interview as well as meeting ID and password.

  6. Log in to Zoom on your scheduled interview. Please dress appropriately for the interview.

  7. Note:Please email musicocs.upd@up.edu.ph if you still don’t have a copy of the audition pieces.

Voice, Music Theatre, and Dance Department

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS


  1. A minimum grade of 65 for Associate in Arts (AA) and a minimum grade of 70 for Bachelor of Music (BM) in the Theory exam is required to be able to proceed to the audition process.

  2. Required Songs

    1. For Associate in Arts (AA) Program

      - One English Song (sung in classical style) and

      - One Kundiman Song (Abelardo, Santiago, Cuenco, San Pedro or F. de Leon)

    2. For Bachelor of Music Program (BM)

      - One song from the Italian Anthology Bk 1 and

      - One Kundiman Song (Abelardo, Santiago, Cuenco, San Pedro or F. de Leon)

  3. An interview will be scheduled via zoom or any online platform available to the applicant.

AUDITION AND SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  1. The 2 required songs MUST be memorized.

  2. Submissions MUST NOT have been edited or enhanced for sound.

  3. The camera or recorder should be placed in a fixed position in front of the applicant showing full body while looking straight at the camera.

  4. Live accompaniment is preferred but not required. Acapella will be accepted.

  5. Very clearly, state your name, your age, the title of the two 2 songs that you are recording and the composer for each song.

  6. Video recording must be submitted via google drive or a youtube link to: movalena@up.edu.ph.

  7. Optional: A recording of a past live performance within a year may be submitted via google drive or a youtube link to movalena@up.edu.ph.

  8. Attire: Sunday’s best (for both the video recording and online interview)

Winds and Percussion Department

Due to the social distancing & enhanced community quarantine limitations brought about by the COVID-19 crisis, panel audition performance will be conducted virtually through an online platform (i.e. Google Drive, We Transfer, Zoom, Viber, Facebook Live, Messenger and Youtube ).

The student admission assessment is a two-step process.

Step one: Theory Exam

Take the theory exam. Passing the theory exam is a prerequisite for the next step. You will be notified by the UP College of Music Secretary’s Office via email or text message of the theory exam schedule.

Step two: Online Audition via recorded Video and Virtual Interview.

Upon passing theory exam (step 1), you will be notified to send your recorded video. And would also be notified of your schedule for the online virtual panel interview.

Upon passing the theory exam, you will be notified to send your recorded video and will also be notified of your schedule for the online virtual panel interview.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING THE RECORDED VIDEO

  1. The requirements for the video recorded audition are as follows:

    1. For Wind Instrument Players

      Two contrasting pieces (i.e. fast & slow), All major and minor scales

    2. For Percussion Instrument Players

      A Piece* for your audition video is provided below for you to study and record a video of yourself. Please be ready with a Snare Drum on the day of the virtual panel interview.

  2. All Video recordings should be properly labelled with your full name, title and composer of the pieces. Please say your full name at the start of your video.

  3. Please upload your videos to WE transfer or Google drive and send link or email to Antonio.maigue@gmail.com. (For reference on uploading your videos via WE transfer, see attached photo below.)

  4. GUIDELINES FOR THE ONLINE PANEL INTERVIEW

    1. Panel audition performance will be conducted virtually through an online platform (i.e. Google Drive, We Transfer, Zoom, Viber, Facebook Live, Messenger and YouTube). You will also be notified of your schedule for the online virtual panel interview.

    2. There will be a sight reading test for wind instrument players and percussion instrument players. A musical score excerpt will be provided by the panel during the interview. Please be ready with your instruments to play during the virtual interview.
