A Resource Guide for Music Research and Creative Opportunities

Research Agenda: Body, Mind, and Music

The UP College of Music aims to actively contribute towards the enhancement of UP’s stature as a research university. For this reason, we intend to invigorate research activities by formulating a college research agenda, which will serve as an anchor upon which faculty members may produce new knowledge within the domains of their specific fields of expertise or in other related disciplines. Articulated under the general theme of Body, Mind, and Music, this agenda upholds the notion that music, though rooted in the universe of sound, is imagined within, and expressed through one’s body. From this inner energy, it is socially shared via diverse modalities, whether face to face or mediated by print and other multimedia channels, including online systems that have far reaches and accessibility to global interchanges. The agenda posits that research, in the exploration of various music and dance phenomena, is an authentic human initiative that grows and develops through one’s reflexivity, discourse, and ability to see things in the wider perspectives of musical ‘practice’. This agenda resonates with the mission-vision of the college in becoming “a community of thinking and creative performing artists and scholars transforming the world through ideas, sound, and movement.”

This research agenda is comprised of, but not limited to the following sub-themes:

1. Music Pedagogy and Learning.

Pedagogy can be developed from years of teaching through observation, documentation, analysis, and writing. As we aim for effective teaching, what methodology do we employ in pursuing this goal within the four walls of our classroom, in the studio, or within the informal venues of music education?

2. Music for Health and Wholeness.

In the pursuit of physical, emotional, and mental wellness, how do we examine the ways by which music and movement are linked to the dynamics of a sound mind-and-body?

3. Cultural Identity, History, and Heritage.

We strive to identify our roots and understand our shared histories as a people. In the interest of empowering local scholarship, let us contribute to the pan-loob (emic) music projects and when necessary, balance these with pan-labas (etic) frameworks in the effort of reinforcing the country’s national consciousness.

4. Advocacy to Community Service.

Our research community is the heart of our life’s work. What do we give back to them in return for their knowledge? How do we espouse for the production of new knowledge and innovate artistry that will benefit the community?

5. Environmental Resilience.

Our engagement in music research and performance is significant in developing emotionally and psychologically resilient individuals. What tools do we develop in bridging communities to cross the dangers of climate change?

While this research agenda is intended to benefit faculty members and administrators, we aim to involve certain sectors of our society in our academic institution. These include the physically challenged individuals, displaced communities, and ethnic minorities. We also prioritize those who are musically gifted, particularly the young who will require special and professional mentoring.
