Jose S Buenconsejo is full professor in musicology at the University of the Philippines at Diliman. He has published an ethnography of possession rituals ("Songs and Gifts at the Frontier: Person and Exchange in Agusan Manobo Possession Rituals," Routledge, 2002) and recently on cultural histories of "alternative modernities" in the musics of Manila and Cebu. His research includes documentations of marginalized indigenous Philippine music traditions, an area in visual anthropology of which he has produced a number of ethnographic documentary films. His theoretical interests have since expanded to include issues on collective memory, mimesis, technology and media cultures, among others. He finished a doctorate in music in the University of Pennsylvania in 1999. He also serves as the liaison officer for the Philippines in the International Council for Traditional Music and continues to serve as consultant for various national agencies, editorial boards, and local universities in the Philippines.
