Gifted Young Musicians Program: General Information and Application Requirements

What is The GYM?


The Gifted Young Musicians Program (The GYM) is a pre-college comprehensive musicianship course for highly talented high school students. The GYM offers full scholarship - the program is totally free for all trainees.

Who may apply for training at The GYM?

The program is open to incoming Grade 9 to incoming Grade 12 Filipino students with intermediate proficiency in a musical instrument* or voice. Students in the special programs for the arts (SPA) in junior high or arts and design track in senior high are preferred. It is also preferable that the students are able to come to UP Diliman if needed. Applicants must have a serious interest in pursuing a music degree in college.

          *Woodwinds (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon); Brasswinds (trumpet, trombone,
           french horn, tuba); Strings (violin, viola, cello, contrabass, classical guitar); Percussion and Piano.

When and where will The GYM be held?

The GYM sessions will begin on July 4, 2022 and end on August 14, 2022. Training will be done online and, if the situation permits, in person at the UP College of Music.

What is included in The GYM training program?

Trainees will attend classes in music theory and literature, one-to-one lessons, ensemble sessions and special seminars on various topics related to musicianship. The GYM trainers include outstanding musicians with international credentials who are based here and abroad.

How does one apply for training at The GYM?

The application process has 2 stages: the 1st Screening and the 2nd Screening.


1st Screening

Applicants need to accomplish the online application form (https://forms.gle/LVHiphbchA47rUKt8) and upload in YouTube a video recording of the required repertoire

Voice

-Two (2) numbers from Concone book or another corresponding voice method book
-One song in English or any foreign language (sung in classical style) and
-One kundiman or Filipino classical piece

OR

-In lieu of the aforementioned requirements, you may submit a 12-15 minute program of your choice

Instruments

- Five (5) major scales and their corresponding relative minor scales (natural, harmonic, and melodic) in sixteenth notes, ascending and descending. For PIANO, four octaves, hands together. For other instruments, two octaves only.
- Two (2) recent etudes
- A 12 to 15 minute classical program of your choice which may include a Filipino piece


Guidelines for Video Submissions

Say your full name at the start of the video. State the title and composer at the start of every piece.
Submissions MUST NOT have been edited or enhanced for sound.
All music should be memorized.
The camera or recorder should be placed in a fixed position in front of the applicant. For instrumentalists, be sure that the entire instrument can be seen. For pianists, the keys of the piano must be visible.
Submit an unlisted Youtube link. Be sure that the link is viewable to anyone with the link.
Optional: A recording of a past live performance within the year may be submitted.

NOTE: If the applicant wishes to audition in more than one instrument, a separate application form should be accomplished for each instrument. 


Checklist of materials required for submission with the online application form:
-Scanned copy of Certificate of Good Moral Character from your principal
-Scanned copy of latest report card or Form 137
-Scanned copy of a Certificate of Parental/Guardian Consent allowing you to participate in The GYM
-Identifying Photo
-Audition Video uploaded on YouTube

2nd Screening

Should there be a need for a second screening, applicants who pass the first screening will be scheduled for a live interview with the selection panel via Zoom. Here, the applicants will be required to:

-Sing the six (6) following scales using “A” vowel or sol-fa syllabi (This is required for all applicants. A reference pitch may be given in between scales)
               -- C, A and E major scales
               -- A natural, harmonic, and melodic minor scales
-Perform additional sightsinging numbers
-Answer questions asked by the panel. The applicant may be asked to perform during this interview.

Application period: April 29 to June 9, 2023
Final interview and audition: to be announced
Announcement of accepted GYM Scholars: before June 30, 2023
